Cuomo Support Dips, Lazio Rises

by on June 14, 2010

It wasn’t too long ago I said that Cuomo’s entry to the race would be the prologue to a decline in his support.

It seems like that is happening already.

Support for New York’s top Democrats among independent voters is eroding as voters remain dissatisfied with government in Albany and Washington, a poll released Monday shows.

The Siena College poll found Democratic candidate Andrew Cuomo, the state attorney general, has lost some ground and his Republican opponents in the governor’s race are looking better to voters. Cuomo’s favorability rating dropped to its lowest level since 2008. While still high at 59 percent, that’s 8 points lower than when he announced his candidacy last month. His lead among independent votes dropped 20 points.

Sure, there’s a long way to go, but the fact of the matter is that a 20-point drop with independents is bad, bad news for Cuomo. If Republicans unite behind Lazio now and Independents start ditching Cuomo is droves this race will be significantly more competitive.

Make no mistake about it, Cuomo’s best days of the campaign are behind him.
